Arena League
Our first mini Arena League
update: Over 200 stores are partici-
pating in the first Arena League
from the eleven major metropoli-
tan areas WotC chose. Additional
cities will be added on September 20th,
and open registration to all of the United
States is now expected no later than this
coming January! Retailers take note!

Prizes include alternative-art versions of
Disenchant and Fireball cards; giveaways
include alternative-art basic Land cards.

Pro Tour News

MCI, the long-distance giant
(sounds like a Visions card, eh?), has
signed to sponsor the $1,000,000 Pro
Tour. The multi-year license gives MCI
exclusive rights to produce and distrib-
ute M:TG prepaid calling cards.

MCI will also develop an interac-
tive voice-retrieval system, which
M:TG players around the world can
access to get frequent tournament ranking
results.

MICROPROSE NEWS
Sid Meier has left Microprose and formed
a new company, called Firaxis, with two of his
buddies from MicroProse. It's rumored that
he's supposed to finish Magic: The Gathering
CD-ROM before beginning any new projects.
We wonder how this will affect the follow-up
product, which was to have highly-anticipated
internet play capability.

ACCLAIM NEWS
M:TG The Planeswalker War
WotC has signed a second computer
game license. This one is with Acclaim,
who are producing a "networkable, real-
time, 3-D strategic warfare, based on the
fantasy adventure world of Magic: The
Gathering."

We saw a demo at Origins - it looked
pretty interesting, and totally different from the
Microprose game. Look for it this fall or winter.

DECIPHER NEWS
Update on future
releases: Star Wars Jedi
Packs are now an
October release. Star
Wars: The Empire Strikes
Back: Hoth is a November release and will have
162 cards in the set. Star Trek: Q-Continuum
is a mid-October release and the print run
is expected to be around 35 million cards.

WHITE WOLF NEWS
Arcadia:
King Ironheart's Madness

This second Arcadia release will be arriv-
ing in stores in early December. It contains
new Leagues, Waylays, Quests, Races, Merits
and Flaws. Like The Wyld Hunt, it comes in
$2.50 Character Packs and Story Packs...
you need just one of each to begin play.

We've been told that the game system
has been streamlined to be faster and more
challenging. There are now two dice used to
resolve challenges, creating a host of new strate-
gies and card effects. The biggest Waylays are
now less overwhelming, and the small ones are
a little more challenging.

There are also new map types to reflect the
sprawling, 21 league city (in contrast, the largest
city in The Wyld Hunt is only one league in size).

We can tell that White
Wolf has put in a lot
of work on King
Ironheart's Mad-
ness, the second of
three Arcadia
releases.

I.C.E. NEWS
Middle-earth:
Dark Minions

This second Middle-earth expan-
sion is expected to be in stores
November 25th. Look for Agents like
the infamous Grima Wormtongue
and Bill Ferny, who can move from
site to site, hindering or threatening
companies.

Also in this expansion are Under-deeps:
Dangerous but often rich subterranean sites like
the awful Under-gates of Moria or the foul
Sulfer-deeps of Dol Guldur, which are accessible
only through sites above and are intermittently
connected by ancient passages delved by the
Black Enemy.

If you saw the art in Middle-
earth: The Dragons,
you already know
how fantastic the
illustrations were
for the set. Well,
with Dark Minions
the art is even bet-
ter! Two pieces by
Brom(!!!), three by
Larry Elmore, "My
Precious" by Tom
Kidd (an awe-
some piece!), at
least 13 cards by
Ted Nasmith,
five by Donato
Giancola, at
least seven by
John Howe,
three by David Cherry and two by Alan
Gutierrez. There are another forty artists, includ-
ing Angus McBride, contributing illustrations to
this 180-card set.

Middle-earth: The Wizards Player Guide
shipped in late August...215 pages at 8-1/2" by
11" Wow, what a great book for $14! If you play
you've probably already bought it.

Middle-earth: The Lidless Eye

This is the third Middle-earth expansion and
it is coming in the spring of 1997. It is a 363-
card stand-alone expansion (with Starters and
Boosters) where you can play a Dark Lieutenant
(or even Sauron) and use minions as your char-
acters, forming companies, etc.

U.S.P.C. Games News
X-Files CCG

Our spies have learned that USPC has now
located the best paper to print the cards on so
they will turn on the presses as soon as the
paper comes in. They expect to do three ship-
ments to distributors begin-
ning October 21st.

Of particular interest to
SCRYE readers is the break-
down of rarity of the cards:
Starter Decks will have 3
Rares, 12 Uncommons and
45 Commons, whereas
Booster Packs will have 2
Rares, 4 Uncommons, and 9
Commons. Plus 1
Ultra-rare will
replace a Rare in
one out of every 18
Booster packs (i.e.
usually 2 Ultra-
rares per 36/pack
box).

There will be five exclusive X-Files promo
cards: 15,000 of "No One So Paranoid" were
distributed at Gen Con; "The Dark Angel"
appears in this issue of SCRYE; Watch for addi-
tional promo cards: Agent Henderson, Fighter
Interceptor and Alien Technology in other mag-
azines between October and December.
