Why The Two Faces?
One of the first questions many players
have about the X-Files Collectible Card Game
is, "Why are there two different games?" This
is in reference to the Basic Game and
Advanced Game for the X-Files CCG. In fact,
there are separate rulebooks included in
Starter Decks for each of these games. NXT
Games decided to design two games because
of the two separate markets which have ini-
tially expressed an interest in the X-Files CCG.
These two markets are the Gaming Industry
and the X-Files aficionado.
The Gaming Industry is, in reality, the dri-
ving force behind any CCG's success and
longevity in the marketplace. The X-Files
Advanced Game is designed with this in
mind. The Advanced Game is the original
game designed for the X-Files CCG. It
includes all of the freedom of designing a
deck and choosing the cards used in game-
play. While designed to be easy to learn and
easily understandable, it includes the nuances
and complexity needed to maintain a long-
term interest in the game.

The Basic Game was adapted from the
Advanced Game on the premise that not
everyone will want to spend the time required
to learn the Advanced Game. The Basic Game
is a simplifigd version of the Advanced
Game. An X-Files fan, a non-serious
gamer, or a first-time player might want
to begin by learning the Basic Game.
Most rules learned in the Basic Game will
carry over to the Advanced Game. As a result,
the Basic Game provides an easy to learn, fun
gaming experience and a foundation for the
Advanced Game.
Finally, why did NXT Games go
with two separate rule books?

Finally, why did NXT Games go
with two separate rule books?
First off, both the Basic Game and
Advanced Game rules were designed to be
self-contained. This means that a player does
not have to read the Basic Game rules to
learn an Advanced Game, only the Advanced
ones, and vice versa. We believed that this
was the most simple and straight forward
approach. NXT Games also did not want
potential players to be overwhelmed by the
apparent length of the rulebook, as there
were actually two separate sets of rules
included. As a result, two separate rulebooks
were created with the player in mind. This
format more appropriately represented the
material needed to play an X-Files game. As
the player, you have the option over which
game you choose to
learn.
This brings us to the
question of what the actual differences
between the two games are. In one sentence,
the Basic Game is a simplified version of the
Ailvanced Game. Now, what does this actual-
ly mean? The differences are as follows:

Deck Construction
In the Advanced Game, each player con-
structs a deck of at least 60 cards. A particu-
lar card can be included in a deck no more
than twice. This gives each player the free-
dom and power to use the Agents, cards, and
strategies desired. The Basic Game is
designed to be played by two players using
Starter Decks. This allows for gameplay to
begin almost immediately and simplifies the
startup process. A 60-card deck can be con-
structed for the Basic Game if both players
desire.
