The X-Files CCG is not even
out yet but already we are fielding
lots of questions like "What do
a Vicious Fangs, Internal Bleeding,
and Fingernail Scrapings have in
common? Why are some of the suit (or category)
names crooked on the tabs of the files? What is the
deal with the random letters that appear on some of
the cards?"

The answer to all of these questions is the same:
The cards mentioned above are part of the embed-
ded contest in the Premiere Edition of the X-Files
Collectible Card Game. Sometimes called "Easter
Eggs," these subtle variations in the cards were
intentionally added as clues, leading to the discovery
of a hidden contest embedded in the card art of the
Premiere Edition, which only the most observant
X-Philes will be able to solve.
How does one find the contest? I thought you'd
never ask. Encoded in certain game cards is a web
address created especially for this contest. First clue:
Can you say, "acrostic?" After that code is cracked,
players who visit the special site will find detailed
instructions on how to enter the main contest. The
contest itself is simple: find a series of specific words
hidden on the game cards (those random letters
again). How many words? What kind of words?
That would be telling, wouldn't it?

Why bother? Well, why not? We're offering,
some cool prizes! We've heard how disappointed
some people were who didn't make it to Gen Con
to get our first promo card, "No One So Paranoid"
so we scraped up a handful of those cards to use as
prizes in this contest. We've also got one of every
other promo card from the Premiere Edition, plus a
very cool T-shirt. One prize will be awarded for
every word correctly identified in the contest (num-
ber of prizes = number of words), plus a grand prize
for the first person who identifies the whole lot of
them. Twelve consolation prizes will be drawn from
the pool of entries that also correctly identify all of
the words but didn't win the grand prize. So, a total
of 23 people will get full sets of Premiere Edition
promo cards, a T-shirt, and some other stuff too,
depending on which prize they win.

treachery and invasion by the oppor-

first set, The Wyld Hunt, is a stand-alone game. It can
also be combined with the first set to play out the full
epic so far.

What makes King Ironheart's
Madness different from The Wyld Hunt?
Arcadia is structured so that players build
characters who undergo specific Quests,
each of which is actually a chapter in an
ongoing story. Each card set has twenty-
five Quests and when combined, tell the
full story of that set. King Ironheart's
Madness resolves the cliffhanger left by
the last Quest in The Wyld Hunt and
continues the tale.
Next, the power level of both the
characters and their opponents are much
higher. Expenenced characters from The
Wyld Hunt will find themselves Waylaid by creatures
that can give them a good fight. The stakes have got-
ten higher, and the dangers are more deadly. Beware
the groves of Rat Apple trees, and the Hypo-Scorpi-
ons that scuttle forth from the darkest human dreams.
Grit your teeth in determination as you wade into bat-
tle against the cog menaces of King Ironheart's
armies. Break out in a cold sweat, as Steelwing, the
part-cog, part-dragon guardian of Ironheart's under-
world, rears from the mist directly in your path.
The escalation of power in this set is handled bv

raising the starting points available to beginning char-
acters and by giving opposing creatures higher
attribute scores. In addi-
tion, When your charac-
ter is undertaking a
Quest from King
Ironheart's Madness,
both he and his oppo-
nent roll two dice to
resolve Tests against
each other rather
than the sin-
gle die rolled in The Wyld Hunt. This gives a greater
range of possibilities, allowing even a weak character
a chance of defeating this set's stronger
creatures.
Another difference between the sets is
in the atmosphere. The Wyld Hunt was
more of a traditional swords-and-sorcery
adventure, as it was set in Ardenmore. This
7kingdom vou might say is formed from
dreams of modern fantasy. King Ironheart's
Madness, however, takes place in Middle-
march, Ironheart's kingdom, and here we
find twisted dreams of mechanical Dystopia.
Take Jules Verne, make him breathe the air
in Los Angeles for a year, and whomp him
over the head with a wet noodle, and he
might come up with a vision like that which
Mad King Ironheart wants to share with the rest of
Arcadia. This stage of the adventure is the mythical
descent into the underworld, and Middle-march is a
dark, gritty, terrifying place.
